Is it SAFE to use NANO hydroxyapatite in toothpastes?
The latest research study say YES, at least in which specifically concerns nanoXIM Hydroxyapatite manufactured by FLUIDINOVA.
This recent study entitled “Nano-hydroxyapatite in oral care cosmetics: characterization and cytotoxicity assessment” conducted at Bone Lab from U.Porto shows that nanoXIM hydroxyapatite can be considered as a safe nanomaterial to be used in toothpastes. The researchers responsible for this study evaluated the cytotoxicity parameters of the nanoXIM hydroxyapatite in several in vitro trials following the European Commission SCCS guidelines and concluded that this nanomaterial is highly cytocompatible towards human gingival fibroblasts and therefore can be considered as safe to be used in oral care products.
Together with the previous paper “Safety Assessment of Nano-Hydroxyapatite as an Oral Care Ingredient according to the EU Cosmetics Regulation” by Ramis et al. (2018), this study produced new knowledge regarding this nanomaterial when used in toothpastes and similar oral care products, presenting a complete set of information to prove its safety and answering the open questions of the SCCS/1566/15 Opinion.

11 September 2018.
The safety of nanoXIM hydroxyapatite materials is one of our primary concerns, since they are used in consumer health products and medical devices. Particularly, the safety assessment of nano-hydroxyapatite used in toothpastes and related oral care products is of main interest to the public, as this ingredient is becoming more and more popular among toothpaste and mouthwash formulators and brands due to its renowned efficacy.
Following the Opinion issued by the European Commission Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety in March 2016 (SCCS/1566/15), where an extended review as made about the safety of nano-hydroxyapatite (including nanoXIM.CarePaste), a new research published in the Cosmetics journal from MDPI was now done to complement the results scrutinized in this Opinion.
In this joint research lead by Universitat de les Illes Balears, the safety and biocompatibility of nanoXIM.CarePaste was assessed and proved by showing no cytotoxic or deleterious effect on gingival tissue for much harsher conditions (longer contact times and higher concentrations) that the real ones found when using these daily hygiene products.
Besides its already well-known proven efficacy, this research concludes and reinforces that nanoXIM.CarePaste hydroxyapatite is also a safe oral care ingredient!

October 2015, Portugal.
A decade ago, FLUIDINOVA was starting as a spin-off of University of Porto and taking the first baby steps on the complex world of business. Determined to develop and exploit new technologies, FLUIDINOVA earlier started developing its NETmix technology to produce nano-hydroxyapatite, which would be later commercialized under the brand nanoXIM. Recognized from the beginning by important research centres and Universities as a high quality material, FLUIDINOVA’s nano-hydroxyapatite soon started to be used by several medical devices manufacturers to fabricate synthetic bone substitutes. A couple of years later, FLUIDINOVA designed a special product to enter the Oral Care business where nano-hydroxyapatite could replace conventional desensitizing and remineralizing technologies, enhancing the new products performance.
Today, FLUIDINOVA and nanoXIM products are globally recognized as a synonym of quality, high performance and innovation. Through our customers, our products are now present all over the world in biomaterials medical devices and oral care products and in the most reputable university and R&D centres.
Today it’s time to celebrate!

FLUIDINOVA will attend the Working Groups meeting held in Torino, Italy, involving all partners to discuss project strategies and initiatives.
With a predicted ageing population and increasing expectations regarding quality of life in old age, there is an ever increasing demand for procedures such as total hip replacements, bone reconstructions, and spinal fusions, resulting from conditions such as articular cartilage degeneration and osteoporosis.
Commercial calcium phosphate composites for bone regeneration are restricted to applications that require only moderate load bearing abilities. High toughness bioinert materials are used in the articulating couple of artificial joint implants, but they do not support direct bone/material interfaces or bond. To date there is no tough and strong ceramic in regular clinical use with ability to create a strong, biologically relevant, interface with bone.
New advances in biomaterials, with improved processing, bioactivity and/or tailored shapes, providing enough structural integrity and bone integration/regeneration are currently in development at the laboratory scale. However, due to the gap between academic R&D and commercial production, and between materials scientists and clinicians, medical application of these new materials will never be possible unless companies and medics are involved in the development.
This COST Action, NEWGEN, aims at creating the seed for the European research and industry collaboration, combining basic knowledge from academic laboratories, R&D centres, medical units from hospitals, and a significant number of companies.

July 2011
A quantitative in vitro dentin tubule blockage evaluation study of a dentifrice containing nanoXIM•CarePaste was carried out. The study demonstrates that nanoXIM•CarePaste material can act as a hypersensitivity teeth reducer active ingredient, since the toothpaste developed with nanoXIM•CarePaste was able to occlude more than 75% of the dentine tubules. Moreover, an improvement of the smoothness of the tooth surface, due to the deposition of nanohydroxyapatite on enamel surface, would enable to have brighter and whiter teeth. In conclusion, the incorporation of nanoXIM•CarePaste in toothpastes and similar oral care products will lead to very promising results in dentin tubule blockage, foreseeing a great potential for nanoXIM•CarePaste as an enamel remineralizing agent and hypersensitivity reducer.

Manufactured as a raw material for bone substitution and other medical technology applications, a line of high-purity, single-phase, nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite nanoparticles comply with ISO 13779 and ASTM F1185 standards respecting heavy metals and phase purity. The synthetic nanocrystals in the nanoXIM·HAp products feature a perfectly aligned structure, and the materials exhibit a high level of consistency. These nanoparticles have a high specific surface BET area of greater than 100 m2/g, and the precise stoichiometry of calcium and phosphate ions results in a calcium-to-phosphate ratio always near 1.67. The materials are produced in paste form at a nano-hydroxyapatite concentration of 15 or 30% by weight in pure water, a convenient resorbable material for applications such as bone injectable substitutes, and as spray-dried powders of pure hydroxyapatite in particle sizes of 2.5, 5 and 10 µm, suitable for bone grafts and drug-delivery systems.
