nanoXIM products for medical applications are synthetic bioactive hydroxyapatite (HAp) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) nano-sized materials used to manufacture medical devices.

These products are very similar to the mineral component of bone, having excellent biocompatibility and the capacity to form strong and stable chemical bonds with bone tissue. As a result of its nanostructure, nanoXIM materials mimic the surface characteristics present in natural hard tissues, improving their biological performance.

nanoXIM products have 100 % hydroxyapatite phase purity and are available as aqueous pastes and powders.

 


nanoXIM products for oral care applications are bioactive nano-hydroxyapatite ingredients available as a water based paste and a fine powder form. 

Nano-hydroxyapatite is the major component of teeth hard tissue, corresponding to 97 % of the enamel and up to 70% of dentin. The tooth enamel building blocks are hydroxyapatite nanocrystals that can hardly be repaired naturally at a rate which maintains teeth integrity avoiding hypersensitivity.

The nanoXIM ingredients for oral applications are key components in oral care products formulations that effectively reduce dental hypersensitivity while enhancing enamel remineralization.

 


nanoXIM products for food applications are bioactive nano-hydroxyapatite ingredients available as a water based paste and a fine powder form.

Calcium phosphates have been widely used to promote bone strength and health in dietary supplements and fortified drinks. Nano-hydroxyapatite is especially suited for these applications as it accounts for up to 70% of human bone.

Functional chewing-gums with nano-hydroxyapatite are suited for enamel re-building avoiding sensitivity.

The nanoXIM ingredients are easy to incorporate in formulations for food applications, both to bone fortification and/or to tooth enamel remineralization, effectively reducing dental hypersensitivity.

 


nanoXIM products are suitable to be used in all known applications of hydroxyapatite, e.g. chromatography, catalysis, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. Hydroxyapatite has been used in chromatography to develop very selective isolation processes of biomolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids and antibodies.

Stoichiometric hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) is stable up to 1000ºC and recognized as an effective catalyst. It also is known to function as a catalyst with both acid and base sites. In pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, hydroxyapatatite has been studied as an inorganic drug carrier to treat diseases through the release of drugs and biomolecules.

 

 

 

 


 

 

IADR/PER Congress 2014

FLUIDINOVA will be attending this IADR/PER Congress in Dubrovnik, Croatia to present to the scientific community an update from the IMCOSS project for “Injectable Medical Ceramics for Bone Repair and Augmentation” sponsored by EU FP7. Together with the other project partners, FLUIDINOVA will show and discuss with the congress delegates the latest results achieved in this research project. Christos Tokamanis, Head of Unit "Nano and converging Sciences and Technologies" at DG Research, European Commission, was visiting CCDR-N and CeNTI, where he had the opportunity to contact with the cutting-edge nanomaterials products and technologies currently available in Portugal.

FLUIDINOVA was invited to participate in this event in order to show its nanoXIM hydroxyapatite materials as an example of a leading EU advanced nanomaterial technology already used in the market of bone regeneration and consumer oral care products.

During the event, FLUIDINOVA representatives had the opportunity to introduce and to discuss with Mr. Tokamanis the benefits of nanoXIM nanomaterials and its presence in the EU market.

In the scope of NEWGEN COST project, FLUIDINOVA as an active member of WG1 will attend the Workshop on Biomaterials being held at the Dental School of Nantes from 7-8th May 2014. Dr. Paulo Quadros from FLUIDINOVA will participate in a joint talk under the topic “Nanocrystalline apatite: from fundamentals to bone substitute materials”. The workshop follows the GRIBOI 2014 - Injectable Osteoarticular Biomaterials and Bone Augmentation Procedures Conference organized by University of Nantes from 5-7th May.

This COST Action, NEWGEN, aims at creating the seed for the European research and industry collaboration, combining basic knowledge from academic laboratories, R&D centres, medical units from hospitals, and a significant number of companies.

New Generation Biomimetic And Customized Implants For Bone Engineering COST.

FLUIDINOVA will attend the Working Groups meeting held in Torino, Italy, involving all partners to discuss project strategies and initiatives.

With a predicted ageing population and increasing expectations regarding quality of life in old age, there is an ever increasing demand for procedures such as total hip replacements, bone reconstructions, and spinal fusions, resulting from conditions such as articular cartilage degeneration and osteoporosis.

Commercial calcium phosphate composites for bone regeneration are restricted to applications that require only moderate load bearing abilities. High toughness bioinert materials are used in the articulating couple of artificial joint implants, but they do not support direct bone/material interfaces or bond. To date there is no tough and strong ceramic in regular clinical use with ability to create a strong, biologically relevant, interface with bone.

New advances in biomaterials, with improved processing, bioactivity and/or tailored shapes, providing enough structural integrity and bone integration/regeneration are currently in development at the laboratory scale. However, due to the gap between academic R&D and commercial production, and between materials scientists and clinicians, medical application of these new materials will never be possible unless companies and medics are involved in the development.

IMCOSS first year progress meeting

The first year progress meeting of the project “Injectable Medical Ceramics for Bone Repair and Augmentation – IMCOSS” was held in Gland, Switzerland in January 2014. FLUIDINOVA and its partners were present to discuss the project progress and the future developments for the second year of this FP7 sponsored project involving the nanohydroxyapatite from FLUIDINOVA.
